Blogging For Kids

computerboy 264x300 Blogging For Kids

I’ve already set up blogs for my sons to write on.  We did that before the summer started.  My original hopes was that they would have someplace to write their stories, complaints and stuff on there.  Someplace that they could express themselves.  The reality is, that they haven’t really wanted to do it.  I think part of it is because no one was going on their websites…. but that was before I discovered EntreCard and other things like EntreCard.

I’d like to get them to start writing more on the computer.  Writing in general is not something they like to do anyway, so trying to get them to do it online has not been easy.  So I’m considering pushing them to do it… make it a weekly assignment for them.  Give them something to write about once a week, with websites to link to and then them having to find other blogs that are relavent to their post to comment on and teach them how to get people to come to their sites.

Of course I’d have full permission to keep an eye on the posts, comments, and such.  The computer is in the livingroom and it’s fully  cyber protected (love having a techie in the house to keep that up).  So I’m not too worried about any “predators”.  But I was just wondering what other parents have done with their kids?

Have any of you put your kids a blog up?

If yes, did they like the idea?

If no, how did you get them to participate with it?

Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated!

Thanks!

I helped my daughter set up a blog because she showed some interest in it and, like you, I thought it would be a great way to encourage writing and give her some typing practice.

She’s had fun, but hasn’t written as much as I thought she would. Feel free to let your sons visit TheKatieWay and leave comments with links to their own blogs so they can all interact. :)

  • I’d love my children to start blogs when they are a little older (they are 4 and 7) and express themselves in writing. I’ve started my older son writing short stories or accounts of his day in an exercise book, which I suppose is an offline version of a blog!

  • I have a blog for each of my boys, luckily I only have two. LOL But as of now they are still a tad too small to fully comprehend it. So I write for them. I did however help my oldest type his first post the other day u can find it in my profile.

    EC Dropped.

i love this idea! i think i’ll take this on for my girls this fall. that way they can write about what their doing and maybe have them pick a verse to share each week. who knows whose lives will be touched!

  • You might want to check out The Little lounge, it is a great, safe place for Homeschooled children to blog and interact with other homeschool children. You can check it out here… http://www.thelittlelounge.com one membership covers the whole family as of last week too! :-)

  • My son’s have just now expressed an interest in blogging and I have thought that it would be a good way for them to practice their writing skills and communication skills. They know about computer safety now and I trust that they will be responsible. Years of building our relationship is what created that. I was planning on creating their blogs this week with them. Mine are teens though…as for my daughter I will not let her have one quite yet.

  • SassyMamma – my boys are teens too, which is why I’m not too worried about them being online, although they aren’t allowed to go on places like myspace still. I’m kinda pushing them to do the blogs, which they are doing right now. heh! I will probably add their blogs to entrecard so that they can see other kids blogs and communicate with other kids like through that. Might get them a little more motivated to write.

thanks to everyone who answered this blog question. It’s been really helpful!

  • I want to thank you so much for the comment you left me. To hear from another mom that her son was breathing too fast also is such a relief. It’s easy for the nurses to say it happens all the time, but it’s a lot easier on me to hear it from a parent who went through the same thing.

    Thank you.

  • I would think this would be a fantastic way to get kids writing . . . especially when they can add all of the fun bells and whistles. I’m a high school teacher, and I just set up an edublog for student use this summer.

Love your blog :-) Just found you through EntreCard and I’m adding you to my favorites.
