Summertime!

summertime Summertime! So I think it’s kinda funny that my sons are all happy that it’s Summer Vacation.  They are home all the time, they don’t have to “go to” school, but somehow “Summer” means something extra special for them.  I know that part of it is because they are watching TV and have friends and family who are in “traditional” school and everyone is talking about school being out.  But I wonder if they think that things are going to be THAT different?

Until a couple of months ago, Roger was using K12 for his schoolwork.  He did have a schedule of sorts.  Although he finished up all of his schoolwork for the  year by the end of March, so it really didn’t matter.  Jack’s been using Time4Learning since Feburary and there’s no time table or schedule for him at all.  Roger will probably be using Odyssey for High school in the fall.  So all of this does make for a more “traditional” style of schedule.  But all of this is just their “foundation” or “core” school work, not there main schooling.

Generally there is a lot more to our “school” than the boys realize.  We’re always schooling.  Sometimes much to their chagrin.  We love watching “Are you smarter than a 5th grader” together and then pausing the show after the question to see which of the boys can get the right answer (by WE I mean Steve and I love it, the boys aren’t always that thrilled to get these little pop quizes, especially when it prompts a new lesson in whatever subject they didn’t get the answer correct in).  We do this for other shows too, like Cash Cab on Discovery channel, or while watching shows like “How The Earth Was Made” or “The Universe”.  These shows may not be brand new during the summer, but we’ll still be watching them together and asking the boys questions on them.

So, although they may not be doing scheduled “school work” every day during these warmer months, they will still be doing schooling!

What are some of the things that you do during Summer that are educational?  Do you plan more trips to museums and national parks?  Or do you just relax for a few months on the schooling?

Let me know!

  • You are my heroine! No way could I homeschool without duct tape and some Jim Beam! :) What we do it travel ~ go somewhere new and explore and learn. I think experiences are the best eduction.

  • LOL! Homeschooling isn’t for everyone, but more and more parents are finding that supplementing their child’s education can be a lot of fun. You’re right, going different places is a great way to keep learning. We’re planning a trip up to Baker, NV at the end of this month to go to a Star Party and then a hike through a cave. The star party is where a whole bunch of people gather in a nice dark place with their telescopes of various sizes and view the sky. You’d be amazed at how clearly you can see Saturn and Jupiter and how beautiful they are to see! It’s GREAT for kids!

  • Mom:

My school year runs from September 1st to August 31st. There is no “summer break” for us.

I tend to follow the “unschooling” method, so school is literally all day every day whenever the moment happens to hit.

Moms last blog post..Where Is the Value in This?

  • Ya know, I loved unschooling, and when we were doing that, the boys would always say the same thing about it… “We never stop schooling”. Unfortunately, as the boys got older, and I got busier with work, unschooling just wasn’t possible. I couldn’t take as much time to create things to do with them. Which is why I had to switch to using a “boxed” curriculum. They started needing more structure as they got older too. I guess we do more unschooling during the summer though. hehehehe
