High Schooler in the House

Yes, that’s right, I said High Schooler!  My Roger, my baby, my first born son, is now a High Schooler.  Where did all the time go?  It seems like just yesterday he was a little baby.   Wasn’t he just adorable as a baby!  This picture was taken about 14 years ago.  I can hardly believe this is the same child that’s downstairs starting his first day of high school.

And here is my teenager now, at almost 16.  Yes, he’ll turn 16 this year, in October.  On the same day that I turn 38, my oldest son will turn 16.  It’s amazing how the time has flown so quickly.  He’s wanting to learn to drive, but that’s going to take some time to get him ready for it.  He’s a little absent minded and doesn’t always pay attention to details, so thinking about putting him into a car is a little un-nerving to say the least.  But He’ll get there eventually.

I’m still homeschooling Roger, but it’s through a charter school.  Mostly because he needs the structure that a online school can give him.  The school that I chose to use is Odyssey Charter High School of Nevada.

How Odyssey works is like this.  Your child has to attend “classes” at the campus once a week for four hours.  This basically counts as 5 days worth of attendance.  The time is spent talking with teachers, working on specific lessons, and things along those lines.  If you miss one day, then technically it’s like you missed a full week.  They do have ways of making up for those lost days, so it’s not too horrible.

Then two days a week they have to meet at a park for P.E. classes.  Luckily the park that the school uses in our area is just up the street from us!  So Roger can walk to his P.E. classes.  Besides those three times that he has to meet with teachers, he’ll be doing all the other school work online.  Even his text books are online!  Which is great, at least in my opinion.

I like the fact that he’s going to get a little bit of outside interactions with teachers.  It’ll give him a little sense of independance.  Plus then he’s got other people besides his parents, to ask questions.  And at the same time I’ll still have a huge part in his schooling.  It’s kinda the best of both worlds.  AT least that’s how I feel right now.  Who knows how I’ll feel in a few months when things get into full swing. But I think I’ll still like it.
